2023 Drum Major Auditions

Before the audition, make sure you have filled out the application below. In the audition, you will be expected to lead the full band in one of the show songs from this year as well as a pep band song chosen at random.

Drum Major
Responsibilities
The drum major serves as an assistant to the band director and should take all of their responsibilities very seriously. They are role models for their fellow band members and should promote excellence at all times. It is the responsibility of the drum major to know each band member by name and treat everyone as an integral and important part of the program. They should excel in the classroom and encourage others to do the same. The drum major is responsible for ensuring that all rehearsals run smoothly and productively. They should work with section leaders to be sure that everyone is on time, prepared, and attentive during rehearsals. The drum major should be the first one to the field and the last to leave.
The drum major should supervise uniform check in and check out procedures and schedule/delegate section leaders to help. They are to make sure that all members of the band are dressed properly before putting on the uniform and that uniforms are hung on hangers correctly after use.
The drum major is responsible for the condition of the band room and should enlist the help of section leaders. They are to maintain order, making sure that all instruments are in cases and put away in locked lockers. The floors and shelves should be cleaned at the end of every band activity.
At football games, the drum majors will work with section leaders to line up the band, check flip folders, and spot check uniforms. They should report any problems immediately to the band director.
The drum major will be assigned to a bus and should keep order on that bus. The drum major is expected to sit in the middle of the bus to be able to observe all band members. Any violation of bus rules should be reported to the band director immediately upon arrival at the destination. Once a drum major is assigned to a bus, they cannot change buses without the approval of the band director.

The band captains will be responsible for equipment and set up for band activities. The band captain works closely with the drum majors to ensure rehearsals are ready to begin promptly. Band captains should be responsible, independent, and trustworthy. Before practices, they will be responsible for setting out yard markers, getting water for rehearsal, and ensuring the field is ready. They should be able to work well with parents and the director to ensure band events run smoothly. The band captain will need to be able to take initiative and accomplish tasks without necessarily being asked to do so. They will work closely with the drum major to keep the band room clean and organized after all band events.
Band Captains will receive instructions from the band director and other staff members. They will delegate to and get help from captains and leaders as needed to ensure all tasks are accomplished in a timely manner.

Captains
Responsibilities
Captains serve as assistants to instructors. They should have a sense of maturity, independence, and responsibility to be able to get things done in a timely manner. They are responsible for maintaining order within the sections and keeping their equipment areas neat and clean. They are to report any damage to equipment and help maintain an inventory of what is available for use. They are to maintain a professional attitude in the stands at all football games and contests.
Captains will help communicate between the drum major and the section leaders. Captains should receive instructions and assist the drum majors, delegating to the section leaders as needed.

Section Leaders
Responsibilities
Section Leaders are critical to the success of the Carson Band program. Section Leaders will monitor their sections, keep them informed of upcoming band events, and hold them accountable for being at all practices and events. They will serve as a role model to all the members of the band and will act with maturity, professionalism, and responsibility. Section Leaders will need to display a high level of musicianship and will be trusted to run sectionals. Section Leaders will work closely with the drum major, band captain, and captains in order to ensure all practices run smoothly and efficiently.

The student leaders should reflect the best the band has to offer and serve as role models for all other band members. They serve as a link between the band and the band directors. The section leaders, captains, and drum majors represent the educational part to the band activities. Those students wishing to attain one of these positions should choose this activity above any other one. This does not mean that they cannot be a part of other activities and organizations, just that this position should take precedence over the others. Failure to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will result in dismissal from the position and possibly dismissal from the program.
